Village Board Trustee Steve Kumorkiewicz--He said costs for seceding probably would be prohibitive, considering Pleasant Prairie would have to purchase Unified school buildings and assume a part of the district's debt, among other costs. He said there were no estimates how much that would be.
Haven't we already paid for these buildings? Weren't people asking to find out what exactly it would take to do this? Wasn't that the whole point of these meetings???

You get a percentage of the buildings (I believe based on your tax/student number), but with that comes an identical percentage of the debt owed by KUSD. Not to mention the costs incurred doing the study to check boundaries, legal battles, what schools we would acquire, etc. As I mentioned, the lawyer didn't seem up to snuff on much, but the process is at least 2 years and costly.
So why can't everyone pay their fair share? Why should Pleasant Prairie pay more per student than Kenosha? We already subsidize their water and sewer. Time for everyone to at least pay thier equal share.
Good luck on that. It's the same reason schools in PP wouldn't be governmentally subsidized in the same manner as KUSD, economic and ethnic diversity. It's economic equalization...not the exact terminology (which I don't know), but you get the gist.
PP won't have ANY P-5 schools (such as Curtis Strange, where my wife teaches) which receive more federal and state funding. Actually, crassly put, we are too wealthy in the Village. In effect, we DO pay our fair share, based on federal and state statutes.
Frankly, if I were one of the Trustees who attended Thursday's meeting (all were present), I'd be upset with the lack of attendance. Amid all the clamoring for separation and such, attendance was virtually nonexistent. None of them mentioned this, but I was truly disappointed. I know we all have commitments and such, but if this was as important to anyone as it was to me. My children aren't even in KUSD yet, but I felt the need to be informed and address those "in power."
This was the meeting with teeth. The budgetary issues were substantially addressed and the separation from KUSD was shown in a legal timeline.
I sent an email Friday at 10am or so to KUSD board members discussing my hope for the cooperative future with Pleasant Prairie. I also stated my disappointment in their complete lack of presence on Thursday....NONE OF THEM EVEN OPENED IT YET!!! Not something I look for in my elected leaders! I will from now on be much more vocal in supporting the school board candidates...hopefully it helps.
