School Commission Meeting Thursday, May 15th

Attend if you can (I can't but meeting is supposed to be recorded and Meeting Minutes written). Ask detailed questions. Are the KUSD people going to be there? Are their numbers real or fluff? No agenda yet (click here).

A. Consider Request of the Pleasant Prairie Village Board of Trustees to Evaluate the Investment Issues Surrounding the Kenosha Unified School District Post Employment Retirement Benefits.
I. Receive Report From Eugene Schulz of Piper Jaffray, the Village of Pleasant Prairie Financial Advisor Concerning the Investment Instruments Used By the Kenosha Unified School District.

As to recorded...I would think so, as it's being held in the auditorium for the first time. I also think the Village understands the tenor and vigor with which to address this topic. Thanks to numerous residents voicing their concerns in any fashion available, the Board and administration are aware of our concerns as citizens.

As to attendees? Who knows...all KUSD School Board members were invited. I believe Bill Johnston was as well (finance director KUSD). I HOPE ALL Village Board members, KUSD School Board, and Mr. Johnston are present.

I EXPECT 1/2 the Village Board, less than 1/2 the KUSD Board (there is no onus on them to attend), and Bill Johnston. I understand there are prior commitments, and KUSD Board met Tuesday.

Once again, anyone wanting to ask questions who cannot attend. Feel free to email them to me. I wouldn't miss this for the world.

I talked with Monica Yuhas Monday night at last Village Board meeting and I believe she said 6:30 PM at Village Hall (still no agenda on website). She said meeting would be audiotaped and minutes written as there was a lot of interest and I had told her previously (and Steve K.) that I couldn't make it but wanted to listen or read what happens.

Monica Yuhas also said there would be Citizens Comments allowed too.

It's 6pm, for sure. I just called to double check.

Mike,

Let me know if you want anything read into the meeting minutes during citizen comments.

The agenda is linked. Not much to it, a discussion on the investment policies from the KUSD.

Bottom line up front: I apologize for failing to mention in my comments last night that a study looking into a future PPSD should NOT be done because of the CDO situation. That instead, any study into a future PPSD should stand on its own merits (i.e. what's best for the kids and the future of the Village). Please accept my apology.

Background: 1. In my attempt to take the high road, stay postive and avoid anything negative in my comments last night , I ended up editing out a key element of my opinion on the subject of a study (i.e. that it should NOT be done because of the CDO situation).

2. I just read the News article by Denise Lockwood. In it she mentions that, "...several residents wanted the village to look at splitting off from the school district and form its own district because they were upset over the financial investment..." I am not one of those residents. I see these as two seperate issues, that just happen to currently be in discussion at present. (I do admit that I am curious about the CDO siutation and I read everything that I can find on the subject, but a seperate PPSD is not the way in my opinion to address it.)

3. It may be splitting hairs, and my apology is surely not useful after the fact, but I now realize that I should have made this clearer last night. I plan on doing better in the future.

I heard it was contentious and rightly so. I'll listen to tape and see how it pans out. I hope all the trustees were present.

I left at 6:45 and it had already been a bit edgey from time to time. The two KUSD folks seemed to appear defensive from the outset and I understand that it heated up after that.

Hearing the same "...it's not a loss yet..." answer over and over again didn't seem all that useful. I am glad to hear that the SC is doing an indy review. To me it shows great wisdom by our SC.
